RAYE wins Song of the Year with Mastercard
"Thank you to my team - I've always dreamed of saying that!"
RAYE has just won the BRIT Award for Song of The Year with Mastercard with 'Escapism.' featuring US artist, 070 Shake. The song marks the singer's first charting solo single since she became an independent artist in 2021 and became both artists' first number-one single of their careers.
'Escapism.', which RAYE dubs as her 'favourite song on the album', was released on 12 October 2022. RAYE has explained that she loves how 'rebellious' the song is for going against the 'pop music structure standard'.
During her speech, RAYE thanked her album collaborator, Mike Sabbath, and recalled how excited she was to hear the beat for the first time in the car and immediately wrote its lyrics.
This year, RAYE made BRITs history by becoming the most nominated artist in one year with seven nominations. Earlier this week, she won the award for Songwriter of the Year. As well as receiving two nominations for two songs in the Song of the Year category, she has also been nominated for R&B Act, Mastercard Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Pop Act, and Artist of the Year.
Other nominees for the category included Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding with 'Miracle', Dave and Central Cee with 'Sprinter', J Hus and Drake with 'Who Told You' and PinkPantheress with 'Boy's a liar'.
