Nominations for British Male Solo Artist
Thirty years after he first won British Male Solo Artist at the BRIT Awards 1984, David Bowie is once again nominated for the Award alongside Jake Bugg, James Blake, John Newman and Tom Odell. The singer who picked up Outstanding Contribution in 1996 shocked the world with his return almost exactly a year ago when he uploaded the video for Where Are We Now? to YouTube – his first new material for ten years. Subsequently The Next Day, his 24th studio album, went No. 1 around the world and has been nominated for MasterCard Album of the Year.
Tom Odell will be looking to pick up his second BRIT in two years after being the first male to win the Critics’ Choice in 2013. He’s continued to build on his success with his debut album, Long Way Down, topping the UK Album Chart and winning fans in the form of BRITs Icon Elton John. He will have another chance to pick up a BRIT on February 19 as he’s also up for British Breakthrough Act.
One who did miss out on that award last year, Jake Bugg, will be looking to claim his first Award as he built on his fantastic debut success in 2012 with his second album, Shangri La, last year. Unlucky to miss out to Ben Howard last year who won British Breakthrough Act, Jake Bugg will be looking to win his first BRIT as this year he built on the success of his debut album with Shangri La, which was released in November.
Equally, James Blake is still searching for his first BRIT after being nominated for the Critics’ Choice in 2011, and missing out to Ed Sheeran for Best Male in 2012. His album Overgrown, which was released last year, has won a whole heap of critical acclaim, including the Mercury Music Prize.
And John Newman is also no stranger to the BRIT Awards. He was the vocalist on Rudimental’s huge smash Feel The Love, which was nominated for British Single last year, and the singer has used this to propel his own solo career in the past 12 months. His debut album Tribute went to No. 1 - a record which included Love Me Again which has been nominated for British Single - and he'll hope to top it off by winning his first BRIT.
The BRIT Awards 2014 take place at London’s O2 Arena on February 19 and will be broadcast live on ITV at 8pm GMT. Click here for a list of all the nominees.
